Overview
Virtual machine owners and administrators have the option to connect to their VM via VM console. In the Self-Service-Portal, they will see the corresponding option for each active VM.
Prerequisite
- Installation of the VMware Remote Console (VMRC)
The VMRC console must be installed on the respective computer from which the VM is to be accessed.
ZIH provides the installation files for Windows and Linux in the Datashare.
Windows
Download: VMware-VMRC-*.zip
Installation is performed according to the instructions of the installation program.
macOS
Download: in app store - VMware Remote Console 12.0.4 (or higher) for Mac (macOS 10.15 and higher)
Installation is performed according to the instructions of the installation program.
Linux
Download:: VMware-Remote-Console-*.x86_64.bundle
Installation is performed according to the instructions of the installation program.
- Important: Configuring the proxy settings
For security reasons, direct access to VMware vCenters and host systems from the campus networks is not permitted. Therefore, a proxy server must be configured in the VMRC settings via which all connections to the virtual machines are routed.
For the required proxy settings, please refer to the FAQ article Help on connection problems with the VM console VMRC.
Console Use
- Launching the VM console via "emergency-access via console" at the 3 points menu behind the vm in VM management section in the Self-Service-Portal¹.
- When asked which program to open the file with, select the "VMware Remote Console" application.
- Then select "Open Link" (the names may vary from browser to browser).
- The console program opens with a pre-filled login mask, in which you enter your "ZIH password" and then select "connect".
